In spite of technological advances and other efforts, criminals are still finding ways to carry out fraudulent activity. Should they come your way, there are steps you can take to limit your risk.

We've outlined the basics to get you started, but also check out our whitepapers section for more best practices. And be sure to utilize the card brands (e.g. American Express®, Discover®, MasterCard® and Visa®) for reliable resources and the most up-to-date fraud prevention information.

Card-Not-Present Best Practices

  • Authorize every transaction
  • Include the expiration date in the authorization request
  • Make sure the Address Verification Service (AVS) response is a match
  • Provide the CVV in the authorization
  • Get a signed delivery slip to AVS matched address
  • Call or email the customer back verifying the order
  • Include your phone number in the customer service field

Card-Present Best Practices

  • Swipe the card.
  • Authorize every transaction
  • Call for voice authorization if prompted, or if cards are not swiping properly through your terminal.
  • Know when to use Code 10
  • Ask for another form of payment for declined transactions
  • Compare the last four digits on the card to the numbers on the sales draft
  • Verify signature
  • Review the card-brand security features
  • Know the warning signs of fraud. Watch for customers who:
    • Purchase a large amount of merchandise without regard to size, style, color or price
    • Ask no questions on major purchases
    • Try to distract or rush you during the sale
    • Make purchases and leave the store, then return to make another purchase
    • Make large purchases just after opening or as the store is closing
    • Refuse free delivery for large items
