The holiday season is officially in full swing, meaning consumer spending is on the rise. There are positive signs for increased revenue for brick-and-mortar, as well as online retailers. More and more consumers are choosing to shop from the comfort and convenience of their home or office, as compared to fighting the holiday shopping crowds. In fact, this year’s Cyber Monday surpassed $2 billion in total sales, a 17 percent increase from last year and the biggest online spending day in U.S. history . This increase in online spending can partly be attributed to the growing number of mobile devices in use. One-third (33 percent) of tablet owners and 19.1 percent of smartphone owners plan to use their mobile devices to purchase gifts online . As e-commerce continues to grow, so do the opportunities for increased revenue generation.

Below are five strategies merchants can and should implement to take advantage of the growing trend of online sales:

  1. Create a seamless online shopping experience – this can drive revenue and convert a one-time buyer into a repeat customer
  2. Optimize a website for mobile functionality – consumers plan to make purchases online this holiday season
  3. Make frequent and consistent contact with customers – send emails offering discounts or coupons to build a loyal customer base
  4. Price match competitors’ merchandise – consumers today are savvy and will research the best prices available
  5. Place a high priority on protecting sensitive cardholder data – eliminate risk and establish trust with consumers to keep them returning
